Frequently asked questions
- How much mulch do I need?
- Multiply your bed area (length times width) by the mulch depth to get the volume. This calculator does it for you: enter the dimensions and depth, and it returns the cubic feet, cubic yards, and the number of bags to buy. A 3-inch depth over 100 square feet needs about 25 cubic feet, roughly 1 cubic yard.
- How deep should mulch be?
- For most garden beds, 2 to 3 inches is ideal. Go 3 to 4 inches if you want stronger weed suppression and moisture retention. Avoid piling mulch against plant stems or tree trunks. Enter your chosen depth in inches and the calculator handles the rest.
- How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
- One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. So a cubic yard is about 13 to 14 bags of 2 cubic feet, or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet. This tool divides your total volume by your chosen bag size and rounds up so you never come up short.
