The Fence Calculator estimates the materials for a fencing project in seconds. Enter your total fence length, post spacing, and rails per section in either feet or meters, and it works out how many posts, sections, and rails you need. Add optional gates to subtract their width from the run.

- Is my data uploaded or stored anywhere?
- No. All calculations happen locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your fence dimensions never leave your device and nothing is saved or sent to a server.
- How does it calculate the number of posts and sections?
- Sections are your fence length divided by the post spacing, rounded up. Posts equal the number of sections plus one (one at each join and a final closing post). Rails equal sections multiplied by your rails-per-section value. Each gate is also hung between its own pair of posts.
- What is the best post spacing for a fence?
- A common default is 8 feet (about 2.4 meters) on center, which balances strength and cost for most wood and vinyl fences. Use tighter spacing on slopes, windy sites, or with heavier panels for extra rigidity.
- How do gates affect the material count?
- Each gate replaces a run of fencing, so the tool subtracts the gate width from your total length before counting sections and rails. It also adds two posts per gate to hang and latch it.
- Should I buy exactly the number of posts and rails it shows?
- Treat the results as a baseline estimate. Buy a few extra posts and rails to account for corners, end posts, slopes, cuts, and waste, and always confirm against your site layout before ordering.
