About Grade Calculator
The Grade Calculator handles two everyday questions in one place. In weighted-average mode you add a row for each assignment, quiz, or exam with its score and its weight, and it shows your average live as you type, which is handy when you only know some of your grades so far. Set every weight equal and it works as a plain class average; give exams more weight than homework and it mirrors how your syllabus actually counts each category. It also flags when your weights don't add up to 100% and normalizes the result so the number stays correct.
Switch to final-grade mode to answer the other big question: what score do I need on the final exam? Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and the overall grade you're aiming for, and it returns the exact percentage you need, including a heads-up when the target is already locked in or out of reach with the final alone. - How do I calculate my weighted grade?
- Pick the weighted-average mode, then add a row for each assignment with its score as a percent and its weight as a percent. The tool multiplies each score by its weight, adds them up, and divides by the total weight. If your weights don't sum to 100%, it normalizes by the total you entered and shows a note.
- What grade do I need on my final exam?
- Choose the "grade needed on final" mode and enter your current grade, how much the final is worth as a percent, and the overall grade you're aiming for. The tool shows the exact score you need. It also tells you if the target is already secured (a very low or negative number) or impossible with the final alone (above 100%).
- Can I use this for my college or university course?
- Yes. It works in plain percentages and weights rather than one specific school's grading system, so it fits classes at any college, university, or high school. As long as you know each item's score and how much it counts, the math is the same whether it's a community-college class or a graduate module.
- How do I calculate a class average?
- In weighted-average mode, give every assignment the same weight and the tool returns a straight, unweighted average of all your scores. If some assessments should count more than others, set their weights higher and it averages them accordingly.
- How do I figure out my current grade so far?
- Add every assignment you've already gotten back in weighted-average mode, each with its score and weight, and leave out anything not yet graded. The running total is your current standing in the class before the remaining work is factored in.
- Can I weight homework, quizzes, and exams differently?
- Yes. Enter a separate row for each item or category and set its weight to match your syllabus, for example 20% homework, 30% quizzes, and 50% exams. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight, so heavier categories move your average more.
- Does it drop my lowest score or replace a test grade?
- There's no automatic drop-lowest or test-replacement feature, but you can do it by hand. Just leave the dropped assignment out of the list, or swap its score for the higher grade before you calculate, and the weighted average updates instantly.
- Do my weights have to add up to 100%?
- No. If they don't total 100%, the calculator still gives a correct weighted average by dividing by the sum of the weights you entered, and it shows a note so you know the total. That's handy when you only want to average part of your coursework.
- Can I use it for a class where I only know some of my grades?
- Yes. In weighted-average mode you can leave out or remove assignments you haven't received yet, and the tool averages only the rows you've filled in. In final-grade mode you just need your current overall grade, the final's weight, and your target.
