About Cake Pan Size Converter
Swap one baking tin for another with confidence. Enter the pan a recipe calls for and the pan you actually own — round, square or rectangular — and the tool compares their base area and tells you exactly how much to scale the ingredients.
There's no simple search answer for 'can I bake a 9-inch round recipe in an 8-inch square?' because it needs real area math — which is what this does. It is completely free with no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use a different size cake pan than the recipe says?
- Usually yes — you just scale the ingredients by the ratio of the two pans' base areas, which the tool calculates for you. A big difference also changes the bake time.
- Is an 8-inch square pan the same as an 8-inch round?
- No. A square pan has more area than a round one of the same width (the corners), so an 8-inch square holds roughly 25% more than an 8-inch round — about the same as a 9-inch round.
- How does the pan converter work?
- It compares the base area of each pan — π×radius² for round, length×width for square and rectangular — since that's what determines how thickly the batter spreads.
- Do I need to change the oven temperature or bake time?
- Keep the temperature the same. Adjust the time: a deeper batter (smaller pan) needs a few extra minutes, and a shallower one (larger pan) bakes faster, so start checking earlier.
- Does pan depth matter?
- Yes. The tool compares base area assuming both pans are a similar depth. A much deeper or shallower tin changes the volume, so treat the result as a close starting point.
