About PDF N-Up (Multiple Pages Per Sheet)
This tool arranges several pages from your PDF onto each larger sheet — a layout printers call "N-up." Choose 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, or 16 pages per sheet, pick an output size (A4, Letter, Legal, A3, or match your source), and the tool scales each page down, keeps its aspect ratio, and centers it in its slot. It is useful for printing handouts, slide thumbnails, proof sheets, or simply saving paper.
Everything runs locally with the pdf-lib library. Your file is read into memory in your browser, the new PDF is assembled there, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The original page order is preserved and pages are placed left-to-right then down (or top-to-bottom then across, if you prefer). You can set the page margin and the gap between cells in points (72 pt = 1 inch) and optionally draw a thin border around each page.
Because it re-lays vector and text content rather than flattening to an image, output stays sharp and text usually remains selectable. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first, and very heavy source pages (lots of embedded fonts or images) produce correspondingly larger files. Mixed page sizes are each scaled independently to fit their slot.
Frequently asked questions
- What does "N-up" mean?
- N-up is a printing term for placing N source pages onto a single sheet — 2-up puts two pages on one sheet, 4-up puts four, and so on. It shrinks each page proportionally so they tile neatly, which is handy for handouts, thumbnails, and using less paper.
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No. The file is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. It is never sent to a server, so it stays private on your device even for confidential documents.
- How many pages can I put on one sheet?
- You can choose 2, 6, 8, 9, or 16 pages per sheet, plus the common 4-up. The tool automatically calculates how many output sheets are needed and fills the last one only as far as your pages go.
- Will the text stay selectable and sharp?
- Yes. Each page is embedded as vector content rather than converted to a picture, so text and graphics stay crisp and usually remain selectable in the output PDF.
- Why can't it open my file?
- The most common reason is that the PDF is password-protected or encrypted, which this tool cannot decrypt. Open it in a PDF viewer with the password, choose Print then Save as PDF to make an unprotected copy, and try again. A corrupted file can also fail to load.
- How do the margin and gap settings work?
- Both are measured in points, where 72 points equals one inch. The margin is the empty border around the whole sheet, and the gap is the space between each tiled page. If you set them too large for the number of pages, the tool warns you to reduce them.
