About Charades Word Generator

Charades Word Generator hands you an endless stream of random words and phrases to act out, sorted into Movies, Animals, Actions, Jobs and Objects, plus an Anything mode that mixes all five into one pool. Add an optional Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty, press New word, and each pick stays hidden behind a tap-to-reveal panel so only the actor sees the answer — no one at the table catches a glimpse as you pass the device around.

It suits almost any group. Set difficulty to Easy and the pool fills with simple, all-ages picks like Elephant, Swimming and Toy Story that work for a children's charades game or a classroom; leave it on Anything or Hard for a party of adults. Every word is family-friendly with no rude or adult-only prompts, so the same list is safe for kids and grown-ups alike. Want straight movie charades? Pick the Movies category and every draw is a film title written to be mimed.

It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Picks come from your browser's cryptographic random generator, so the draw is genuinely random and well shuffled, and the tool remembers recent words to avoid immediate repeats. Nothing you do is sent anywhere — once the page has loaded you can keep playing even offline.

Frequently asked questions

Are the charades words random?
Yes. Every pick is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so the order is fair and well shuffled. It also remembers recent picks and draws from what is left, so you will not get the same word twice in a row until the pool runs out.
How many words are there?
166 words and phrases across five categories: Movies (36), Animals (34), Actions (32), Jobs (32) and Objects (32). The "Anything" option mixes all five into one 166-entry pool.
How many words are in each difficulty?
Of the 166 entries, 63 are Easy, 70 Medium and 33 Hard. The "In this pool" stat under the card always tells you how many entries your current category and difficulty are drawing from.
Can I use this for a kids' charades game?
Yes. Set the difficulty to Easy and the pool fills with simple, all-ages picks like Elephant, Swimming and Toy Story that young children can act out and guess. The tap-to-reveal panel also lets a parent or teacher hold the word for a shy actor.
Are the words suitable for children?
Yes. Every entry is family-friendly with no adult themes. The 63 Easy entries — things like Elephant, Swimming and Toy Story — work well for young children and classroom groups.
Does this work for adults?
Yes. The Hard pool and the mixed Anything mode give grown-up groups plenty to work with at parties and game nights. Every word stays family-friendly, so there are no rude or adult-only prompts.
Can I play movie charades with this?
Yes. Choose the Movies category and every draw is a film title written to be mimed, from a 36-entry movie pool. Add a difficulty if you want the titles easier or harder to guess — note that Movies on Hard narrows to just four entries.
Is there a Christmas or holiday charades mode?
No. The five categories are Movies, Animals, Actions, Jobs and Objects, with no seasonal or Christmas word list built in — the only controls are category and difficulty. The words are all family-friendly, so a mixed round still fits a holiday gathering.
Why did my pool get so small?
Narrow combinations shrink it quickly — Movies on Hard is only four entries. If the pool is smaller than your group, widen the category to Anything or set difficulty to Any.
Will the same word come round again?
Not straight away. The generator remembers the most recent picks — up to ten, or half the pool when the pool is smaller — and draws from what is left, reusing words only once the pool runs out. Reset clears that memory and the round counter.
How does the hidden word work?
Each new word arrives behind a "Tap to reveal — actor only" panel, so you can pass the device around the table without anyone glimpsing the answer. The Copy button stays disabled until the word has been revealed.
Is there a timer or a scoreboard?
No. It draws words and counts how many you have been through this round; timing and scoring are up to you. A phone timer covers the usual 60- or 90-second turn.
Can I add my own words?
No. The word list is built in, with no box for importing or editing entries — the only controls are category and difficulty.
How is this different from the Pictionary generator?
These words are written to be acted out silently and stay hidden until the actor reveals them. The Pictionary generator uses a separate 120-word list built for sketching and shows the word immediately, since only the drawer is looking.
