About Image to WebP
Image to WebP turns a PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, SVG or even an existing WebP into a WebP file entirely inside your browser. It decodes the picture with the browser's own image decoder, draws it onto an off-screen canvas at its exact width and height, and re-encodes it as WebP at whatever quality you pick. The slider runs from 10% to 100% in 5% steps and starts at 80%; each time you nudge it the image is re-encoded and the panel refreshes the original size, the new size, the percentage saved and the pixel dimensions, so you can settle on the smallest file that still looks right. Download hands you a .webp named after the original.
The usual reason people convert an image to WebP is page weight. A 2.4 MB camera JPEG often drops to 300–400 KB at 80% with no visible change, which is why it is handy for prepping product shots for a Shopify or WordPress theme. Transparency survives the trip, so a PNG logo on a transparent background comes out as a transparent WebP rather than one filled with white.
Two things to know. An animated GIF is flattened to its first frame, since a canvas holds one still image. And WebP encoding depends on the browser — Chrome, Edge and Firefox do it natively, while Safari's canvas cannot, so use one of the others here. Camera metadata like EXIF and GPS is dropped, though the photo is rotated upright first so a phone picture never lands sideways. Nothing is uploaded; decoding and encoding both happen in your browser and the file is offered straight back.

- This happens with small, flat PNGs such as icons, or with JPEGs that were already heavily compressed. The panel shows Larger instead of Smaller when that occurs; lower the quality or keep the original.
- Does converting change the image dimensions?
- No. The canvas is set to the image's exact pixel width and height, so a 1920 x 1080 PNG produces a 1920 x 1080 WebP. Resize first with the Image Resizer if you also need it smaller.
- Which browsers can convert to WebP?
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other Chromium-based browsers encode WebP in canvas. Safari does not, so results there are unreliable; switch browsers for this tool.
- Is WebP always smaller than JPG?
