About Portfolio Rebalancing Calculator

This portfolio rebalancing calculator tells you exactly how much of each holding to buy or sell to return your investments to your target allocation. Enter each asset with its current dollar value and the percentage you want it to be, and the tool computes your current mix, your target mix, how far each position has drifted, and the precise trade to correct it.

Your target percentages do not have to add up to 100. Whatever you enter is normalized proportionally, so you can type 60/20/20 or 3/1/1 and get the same plan. There is also an optional "new cash to invest" field: adding a contribution lets you rebalance by buying more of whatever is underweight, which can help you avoid selling appreciated positions and the taxes that come with them.

Everything runs privately in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, saved, or sent anywhere, and there is no sign-up. The results are an estimate for planning only and do not account for taxes, transaction fees, trading lot or share sizes, or order timing, and nothing here is financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How does the rebalancing math work?
The calculator adds up your holdings to get your total portfolio value (plus any new cash you enter). It multiplies that total by each asset's target weight to get a target dollar value, then subtracts the current value. A positive number is how much to buy; a negative number is how much to sell.
Do my target percentages have to add up to 100%?
No. The tool normalizes whatever weights you enter so they sum to 100%, so 60/20/20 and 3/1/1 produce the same plan. It also tells you what your raw entries summed to, in case a typo made them add up to something unexpected.
What does the 'new cash to invest' field do?
It lets you rebalance with a contribution instead of by selling. The new cash is added to your total, and the plan directs it toward underweight holdings first. This is useful for avoiding capital-gains taxes that selling can trigger.
Is my financial data private?
Yes. The calculator is 100% client-side. Your holdings, values, and targets are processed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded, stored on a server, or shared. Closing the tab clears everything.
Does it account for taxes and trading fees?
No. The buy and sell amounts are the raw trades needed to hit your targets. It does not model capital-gains taxes, commissions, bid-ask spreads, or whole-share and lot-size constraints, so treat the amounts as a starting point and round to what your broker allows.
Can I use it for any number of holdings?
Yes. Add as many assets as you like with the 'Add asset' button, and remove any row you do not need. It works for a simple two-fund portfolio or a detailed mix of stocks, bonds, and cash.
