About Ideal Weight Calculator

This ideal weight calculator estimates a target body weight from your height and sex using four well-known clinical formulas: Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964). Each formula gives a slightly different number because they were derived from different populations, so the tool shows all four, an average of them, and a healthy weight range based on the normal BMI band (18.5 to 24.9). You can switch between imperial (feet/inches, pounds) and metric (centimeters, kilograms).

The classic ideal-weight formulas were designed around heights of 5 feet and above and depend only on height and sex. They do not account for age, body frame size, muscle mass, or overall body composition, so a very muscular or petite person may fall outside the estimate while still being healthy. For most people the healthy BMI range is the more practical target than any single ideal-weight number. If your height is under 5 feet, the tool flags that the ideal-weight figures are extrapolated and less reliable.

Frequently asked questions

How is ideal weight calculated?
The tool applies four formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi) that each start with a base weight at 5 feet tall and add a fixed amount per inch above that, using different values for males and females. It shows each result, their average, and a healthy weight range derived from a normal BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
No single formula is definitively best; they simply reflect different reference populations. That is why the tool shows all four and their average. In practice, the healthy BMI-based range is often a more useful and modern target than any one ideal-weight figure.
Why do the formulas give different results?
Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi were each developed at different times using different data, so they use different base weights and per-inch increments. Differences of a few pounds or kilograms between them are normal and expected.
Does this account for age, frame size, or muscle?
No. These formulas use only height and sex. They do not adjust for age, body frame, or muscle mass, so athletic or very slight builds may fall outside the estimate while still being perfectly healthy. Treat the numbers as a rough guide, not a precise goal.
Is my data private?
Yes. All calculations happen locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your height, weight, and sex are never uploaded or stored, and there is no account or sign-up required.
Can I use metric or imperial units?
Yes. Use the units dropdown to switch between imperial (feet/inches with pounds) and metric (centimeters with kilograms). All results, including the average and healthy range, update in your chosen units.
