How to use Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the trip distance and pick miles or kilometres, and tick round trip if you are driving back.
  2. Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency and fuel price, choosing the units that match your car and the pump.
  3. Read the total cost, and optionally add trips or split between passengers to see the per-person share.

About Fuel Cost Calculator

This fuel cost calculator estimates what a drive will cost in gas or diesel. You enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price, and it returns the total cost, the fuel used, and the cost per mile or kilometre. The core formula is simple: distance divided by efficiency gives the fuel volume needed, multiplied by the price per unit.

It handles mixed units so you can enter numbers exactly as your car and the pump show them. Distance can be miles or kilometres, efficiency can be MPG (US or Imperial), L/100 km, or km per litre, and price can be per US gallon, UK gallon, or litre. Everything is converted internally, so a US MPG figure works fine against a per-litre price, and vice versa. You can also mark a round trip, set a number of trips to total up a commute, and split the cost between passengers for carpools.

The tool runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. Results are estimates for planning: actual consumption changes with traffic, terrain, load, weather, tire pressure, and driving style, so treat the figure as a close ballpark rather than an exact fuel bill.

Frequently asked questions

How is the fuel cost calculated?
It divides the trip distance by your fuel efficiency to find how much fuel the drive needs, then multiplies that volume by the fuel price. Round trips double the distance, and the number-of-trips field multiplies the total.
Can I mix units like miles and litres?
Yes. Distance, efficiency, and price each have their own unit selector, and everything is normalised internally. You can enter a US MPG figure against a per-litre price, or kilometres against a per-gallon price, and the math stays correct.
What is the difference between US and Imperial (UK) MPG?
A UK gallon is larger than a US gallon (about 4.55 litres versus 3.79), so the same car shows a higher number in Imperial MPG. Pick the option that matches how your figure was measured to avoid a roughly 20 percent error.
How accurate is the estimate?
The arithmetic is exact for the numbers you enter, but real fuel use varies with traffic, terrain, load, weather, and driving style. For the best estimate, use your car's actual observed efficiency rather than the sticker rating, and the current pump price.
Can it split the cost for a carpool?
Yes. Set the number of people in the trip and the tool shows the per-person share of the total fuel cost, which is useful for splitting a road trip or commute fairly.
Is my data private?
Yes. The calculator runs completely in your browser with no network calls, uploads, or sign-up. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
