Web publishers love WebP because it makes images small, but that same format trips up plenty of everyday software. Email clients, older photo editors, some print shops, and a few marketplace upload forms still expect a plain JPG. Converting is quick and, for most images, the change is invisible. Here is how to do it cleanly, what to watch out for, and when a JPG is actually the wrong choice.
What "converting WebP to JPG" really means
WebP and JPG are both compressed image formats, but they are not interchangeable. A WebP file can store transparency (an alpha channel) and can even hold animation. A JPG can do neither. So a conversion is really a re-encode: the picture is decoded, redrawn, and saved using JPEG compression instead of WebP compression.
Two consequences follow from that, and they matter later:
- Transparency disappears. Any see-through areas have to be filled with a solid color, or they would render as black.
- It is lossy to lossy. You are re-compressing an already-compressed image, so there is a small quality cost. In practice it is usually invisible, but it is not zero.

Honest limits and failure modes
A trustworthy conversion means knowing where it stops being the right tool.
Transparency is gone for good. If you need the background to stay see-through โ for a logo over a colored webpage, for example โ JPG cannot do it, and this conversion will bake in a white background. In that case, keep the WebP or convert to PNG instead, which preserves transparency.
Animated WebP loses its animation. Some WebP files are short animations. A JPG is a single still frame, so you will get only one frame. If you need the motion, convert to GIF or MP4, not JPG.

Re-compression is one-way. Converting WebP to JPG and back to WebP will not recover any quality lost along the way. Keep your original file if you might need it later.
Very large images depend on your device. Because everything runs in the browser, an extremely large image is limited by your device's memory rather than a powerful server. Ordinary photos and web graphics are fine; a massive multi-megapixel file on an old phone may struggle.
When a different approach is better
- You need transparency: convert to PNG, not JPG.
- The source is animated: export to GIF or video.
- You must hit an exact file size: compress the JPG afterward with a quality slider or size-target tool.

Open the downloaded JPG and confirm three things: the colors look right, any previously transparent areas are the white you expected (not a surprise), and the file opens in whatever program rejected the WebP in the first place.
